Large Numbers, The Bane of WoW Forum Denizens

Ranking 34,000 out of 38,000,000 is godlly, yet for World of Warcraft players it simply isn’t good enough.

I’ve been answering questions, complaints, and worse in the official WoW forums.   The biggest gripe that players seem to have is that their score isn’t high enough.   Fair enough, everyone wants to be #1, BUT when you dealing with extremely large numbers being in the 99th percentile is still pretty freakin’ amazing.

One player commented that he was scored too low with a rank of 34,000 out of 38 million.   Let’s put this in perspective.

  • Alaska has 34,000 kilometers of shoreline.
  • Venus at its closest point is 38,000,000 kilometers from Earth.

I understand that immense numbers are impossible for most people to comprehend.  Can we even truly understand what a million of something is, much less 38 million?

Other players, because they cannot understand how the scoring works, claim it is wrong.   They also believe that witches float.

Now for the fun…
